Finding Your Way Around the Tree

Now look at the tree diagram on the left-hand side. It contains an outline of the job description.

The very first item — the root of the tree — is the job title. Beneath it are 5 main items:

  • Job Summary (a short description of the job)

  • Direct Reports (who reports directly to this person)

  • Core Responsibilities (identifies the core tasks and accountabilities for this position)

  • Behavioral Expectations (identifies the key behaviors that someone must demonstrate to be successful in this position)

  • Hiring Criteria (identifies the key skills and talents that someone should possess when you hire them)

Most descriptions will have this structure, but you can change the structure to suit your needs. You can change any part of the tree, its percentage weights, and the text within any section of the tree to suit your company's needs.

Now try clicking on various items in the tree (in the real TIP, not the picture here, of course). You will see that each item has its own text areas. Click on any item of the tree to see what is written within it.

Note also that each core responsibility and behavioral expectation has a weighted value - a percentage. Soon we will tell you how to change these percentage weights.

Just as in Windows Explorer or Outlook Express, you can click on + or - to show or hide the subordinate items in each part of the tree. Try clicking on some pluses and minuses now.
